Dungannon Rugby Club I XV 34 v Queens University Rugby Club I XV 10

This was a typical Dungannon Queen’s Ulster League match, Dungannon got
their win and the bonus point but they had to wait until the final quarter
to achieve dominance.
Dungannon started well with Michael Lawton converting penalties on five and
ten minutes.

Queen’s responded with a James McKinney penalty on fifteen minutes.

The weather was good, the afternoon was primed for a feast of rugby with
both sides keen to move the ball about but unfortunately the game never got
going; the proceedings were punctuated by minor infringements. After
twenty-five minutes following some good work by the Dungannon pack the first
try was scored when Ben Howard was driven over with Michael Lawton kicking
the conversion.

The second half was disrupted early on by two unnecessary yellow cards in
the first and second minutes. Gannon got moving again but Queen’s stopped
a dangerous Dungannon attack and broke out of defence to score a good try
when Stuart McIlwaine finished off the counter attack on fifty minutes.
James McKinney converted.
13 – 10
The game was very scrappy for the next ten minutes then Dungannon got into
their stride again. On sixty-eight minutes Dungannon moved the ball at pace
with good running from Rowan Halsall, Timothy Smith with the white booted
Duhig sending Stuart McCloskey through. The big fellow finished the try off
with a neat change of pace that took him over behind the posts. Michael
Lawton converted.
20 – 10
Following good work by Ali Birch and Rowan Halsall Dungannon gained great
field position from where Timothy Smith kept his head and scored the try.
Stuart McCloskey kicked a good conversion on seventy minutes.
27 – 10
Dungannon continued to press and deservedly got their fourth try when Jason
Bloomfield sent Stuart McCloskey searing through in the final minute for the
bonus point score. Stuart also added the extras.
34 – 10
Overall a game that did not fulfil its potential but Dungannon gained a
maximum five points; who can ask for anything more.
Prior to the opening AIL game on 1 October we travel to Eaton Park next
Saturday to play a double header against Ballymena for the Ulster League
points and the weather postponed 2010 Jack Kyle Cup.
