Ballyshannon women travelled to Ballymoney on Sunday and played in artic like conditions. Credit must be given to both teams for their enthusiasm and the way they performed in such weather. Yet despite the conditions Ballyshannon played their best game of the season.
Playing against the elements in the first half the Ballyshannon ladies put up a stern defence and were determined the hold the home side and limit them to as few chances as they could. Ballymoney knew that they had to score with the wind at their backs and threw everything at the visitors, yet the Ballyshannon girls thwarted their every attack and never allowed them to breach their line. The Ballyshannon women grew stronger as the half went on and started to take the game to the home side. With ten minutes left in the half Pauline Mc Mahon broke out from her own side of the field and raced fifty yards, beating three defenders as she went ,before feeding to Orla Sherdan who fed Kitty Dolan who then scored under the posts. The try was converted by Siobhan Coughlin.
In the second half Ballyshannon played a controlled brand of rugby knowing that if they kept the ball in the oppositions half they would not lose. The forwards played as a unit and provided clean ball for their backs and from one of these moves Siobhan Coughlin outstripped the home defence and scored under the posts. Siobhan converted her own try. The Ballymoney girls had no answer for the team work of the Ballyshannon women and were well beaten when Orla Sheridan scored her debut try after been put through by Mairead Carty.
This victory will stand to Ballyshannon in preparation for the cup game next week when they host rivals Letterkenny.

Streets of Ballyshannon – 5k run/walk
Ballyshannon Rugby Club is hosting a 5k run/walk on Saturday January 25th 2014 at 2pm. The course will take the athletes around the streets of Ballyshannon, the oldest town in Ireland. The event will be accurately measured and precision timing used on the day. The run will cater for runners and walkers with categories of senior men, senior women, veterans, junior male and female (under 18) and spot prizes for walkers. The event will start at the Abbey Cinema and finish at the Lakeside Centre. This 5k will be a stepping stone for the Cara 10m later on in the year.
