The Number Eight
The Number 8 does not have a specific name and is simply referred to as the number eight. In the scrum, he sits at the far back between the locks (second row) and gives them that extra umph that provides added weight during the push. On the offensive side of the ball, he can choose to pick and go from the scrum, or control the ball and protect the scrum half.
Around the pitch their primary role is really as a support player, rucking and tackling. They are also typically a very strong ball carrier, and most teams utilise these players as line breakers in attack.
