Michael Lawton has been selected to represent Ireland in the final 28 man squad this summer, which will be the basis for Ireland’s preparations for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio. Here is an excerpt from a recent interview and notes from local press where Irish rugby player Michael originally from Ireland is now teaching,

The selection process for the squad started in March when he attended an open trial in Birmingham for all Irish qualified players based in England, Scotland and Wales. Roughly 80 players attended, along with another 400 attending an open trial in Dublin around the same time. Out of the 80 players in Birmingham, 12 were selected to attend a joint trial in Dublin a few weeks later.

Mike, who plays fly half or centre in 7s, said: “It’s a huge honour to be asked to represent the Ireland national side and a great outcome for me after all of the hard training – especially during the winter months – that I’ve put in over the years. Playing international rugby is something I have dreamed of my entire life and now that it’s starting to becoming a reality, I can’t wait to get out there and do myself, my family and my nation proud. I’m looking forward to joining my team mates over the next lot of weeks and lining out on the field alongside them for the upcoming tournaments.

“Hopefully, my success will help inspire many of the young people, girls and boys, that I teach rugby to at Sexey’s, which is something I will take a huge amount of pride in.”
