Under 18 Girls Beat Close Rivals Monaghan

The Virginia girls took on Monaghan in a league match encounter on Sunday last.  The first fifteen minutes seen both teams battle with nerves before they finally settled into the game.  Amanda McQuade crossed the try line first, with another try following very quickly from Sara Whitley, both which were ably converted by Lisa Mullen.  The visitors continued their pressure on the Monaghan girls and before half time Ciara Brown had added a third try to the tally, which Lisa again converted.

The second half kicked off with some great displays of teamwork from Virginia and whilst the two tries in the second half came from forwards play, the backs showed great handling skills and ability.  Despite pressure from the hosts in the final fifteen minutes of the game, Virginia refused to concede a score, and following a kick back into Monaghan’s half, Ava Fannin broke through the defence line scoring her first try of the season.  Keelin Brady added a fifth try for her side and with Lisa very much on kicking form, the score ended 33-0 to Virginia when the final whistle blew.  Many thanks to our hosts Monaghan for their hospitality.

The Virginia girls welcome Armagh/Cloghervalley to Deerpark in two weeks time on Sunday 18th for their last league match before Christmas.  All support welcome.

U18 claims bragging rights over neighbors North Meath.

Virginia RFC U18 came out winners 26-20 of a tough derby game with Kells based neighbours North Meath.

Due to few lads missing or injured Virginia put out a reshuffled team. It was also a good opportunity to introduce 3 new starters to their first ever rugby game.

The game was played over 3 thirds and the constant swapping and changing of positions didn’t help the flow of the game but nevertheless Virginia showed great commitment and skill to pull out the win in the end.

Lots of positive to take onboard for the coaching team and still a lot to work on.

League competition will resume next week with a trip up the N3 but in the other direction to take on Cavan RFC.
