The new rugby season is fast approaching and there is a great air of excitement and enthusiasm at Lime Park home of Armoy rugby club. One of the reasons for this was the first training session of their new mini rugby section “Armoy RFC Wasps” which was held on Saturday morning.
The session was very well attended by just under 50 children from the surrounding area with an age range of 5-11.This attendance was a result of a recruitment drive over the previous few months inviting kids who were interested in learning how to play rugby to register at the clubs annual family fun day back in mid July.
The response to the fun day was better than anyone at the club could have expected and even more people who were unable to attend the fun day were getting into contact with the club to express their interest in joining with more registering before the training session on Saturday morning.
It has been a nervous time for the 4 principle coaches Neil Porterfield, Gareth Christie, Enda Casey and Frank Casey as they didn’t really know what to expect. However they needn’t have worried as all the new wasps were a pleasure to coach and any feedback they received after the hour long session (which absolutely flew past) was positive from both the kids and from the legion of parents who had stayed and observed from the sidelines. (Tea and Coffee will be available for parents from next week)
Thanks must also go to Shaun Bloomfield and Ricky Huey from the IRFU Ulster branch who instructed the new coaches at their coaching coarse back in February, and also attended the first coaching session on Saturday.
The mini rugby sessions will be held at Lime Park every Saturday morning from 10-11am.and warm welcome awaits anyone who wants to bring a buzz to Lime Park by joining the “Wasps”.
