Double-winner Trimble itching for return to fray

Andrew Trimble watched Saturday’s win over South Africa from the Aviva Stadium stands and recognised the progression being made from spring to summer to autumn.

His role in the success in Joe Schmidt’s first season was recognised by his fellow players last May and last night he again basked in the glory of a second Player of the Year award, this time voted by the Guinness Rugby Writers of Ireland.

It marked the culmination of a stunning 2014 for the Ulster winger who, this time last year, was not even in the squad.

A broken foot kept him out this time around but he has earned the trust of the coach and, all going well, will be back involved for the Six Nations, although he has a battle on his hands to reclaim his jersey.
